L’escargot aux yeux écarquillés (2011)

oil on canvas
18″ x 36″
The title of this piece translates to “The snail with eyes wide open”. Here I am the snail, newly awakened and tentatively crawling forward. Perhaps I will attempt to withdraw myself from my shell, leaving behind all my apathy and fear…or perhaps I will continue to drag it along with me. The environment of twisting tree roots, plentiful rocks and a set of stone stairs is meant to represent future challenges since rocks, tree roots and stairs will bring fatigue and discomfort to the vulnerable creatures cursed to crawl over them.
